Born in a poor Dalit family in Rawalpindi (now Pakistan), Shailendra and his family moved to Mathura. This sweet soul, whose ancestors belonged to the Ara district of Bihar, was a shy, reticent man, deeply rooted in Indian culture. For the countless admirers of this Kohinoor of melodies, he was simply known as Shailendra!
